Happy 95th Birthday Iris Apfel
If you were one of fashion’s biggest stars, how would you spend your 95th birthday? Fashion icon Iris Apfel, whose official birthday was today, started out with a weekend in Newport, Rhode Island. We’ve had a lot of plans. “I was a house guest at the most divine house,” explained Apfel. “I thought I was in a French country house. It was just beautiful. I had a dinner party, and candles in the chandeliers. It was fabulous.” Then, on Apfel’s actual birthday, jewelry designer Alexis Bittar threw her party at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. The day after, to fete both her birthday and her Iris Meets I.N.C. collection at Macy’s, she had a chic lunch at La Sirena Ristorante.
Apfel gave some useful tips for aging gracefully: “You work hard,” she said. “Be happy. Live each day as it comes. Live everyday as though it will be your last and one day you’ll be right. Too many people just retire from life. It’s obvious, isn’t it? If you don’t walk you won’t be able to walk anymore. You’ll atrophy. If you don’t want life then you retire from it. If you want to have a nice life, participate. If you’re not interested, you can’t be interesting.”
The style star went on, saying that she doesn’t look for inspiration, that she just has a will to do things. “You do one thing and it leads to something else, and the man upstairs has been very good to me and has sent me a lot of interesting projects, which I work very hard at,” said Apfel. “I’m a very very hard worker, and I work hard and people tell me do more than people less than half my age.”
Apfel’s Iris Meets I.N.C. collaboration features her signature bold, round glasses, psychedelic-print dresses, pants and skirts, and her signature accessory: “I wear a lot of costume jewelry and I wear a lot of bracelets,” said Apfel.
