BB-8 with the Jedi Force – New
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was all anyone could talk about for the last month of 2015. The movie smashed box office records for attendance while the Internet hype reached a fever pitch, and BB-8, the movie’s roly-poly new droid, was a crowd favorite right from the start.
BB-8 made appearances on Star Wars promotional products, people made cakes in its image, and just in time for the holidays, Sphero released a BB-8 robot toy that rolls, whirrs, and boops just like the one in the movie. I GOT ONE!! 😀
That version of BB-8 was controlled through a combination of voice commands and a remote control app on your smartphone, but according to Sphero, Star Wars nerds will be able to control the next version WITH THEIR MINDS (well, kinda).
You know those awesome Jedi gestures that you always wish for when the remote is on the other side of the room and you don’t want to get up? They never work on the remote, but soon they WILL work on BB-8.
Of course, we’re all just wannabe Jedi, so the “Force” behind this awesome upgrade actually comes from a new wearable that will accompany the next gen BB-8.
Here’s how it works, according to The Verge:
“Resting your hand to your side enters driving mode. With your palm down, [it] looks away from you; with your palm up it looks toward you. Spin in place, and BB-8 spins with you. The direction also dictates where it drives, and the rolling speed is at least somewhat affected by your hand’s elevation. Waving your hand in place will enter a gesture mode — the only one that worked for me was a nod “yes” when we did a quick right jab — and then putting your hand back down re-engages driving mode.”
Sphero showed off the Force-enabled BB-8 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, but sadly says it won’t be available for purchase until Fall 2016. Also no word on price, which is sure to be astronomical.
